Therapy for Parenting

Does it feel like you and your child speak a different language?

Parenting is hard, but sometimes it’s really hard. Maybe you feel helpless as your child has started to rebel or shut down entirely. You may feel like, despite all your best efforts, they don’t understand or want to connect with you. You know how brilliant and wonderful your child is but you don’t recognize this withdrawn or isolated version of them.

You want to be able to enjoy this relationship with your child, to cheer them on as they grow, and to be someone they trust and rely on.

Let’s work together to help you restore your connection with your child.

When our kids struggle, it’s easy to blame ourselves. You may feel like you did something “wrong” or like you “should” have known or done something differently as they were growing up.

Please know this: your children are not a reflection of you—they are their own person. In therapy, we’ll work on acknowledging and embodying who you are as a parent and celebrating who your child is as an individual. From there, we’ll cultivate new ways for you to communicate and connect with your kid.

Are you the parent of a queer or trans child?

Parenting a child or teen who is questioning or identifies as LGBTQ can be confusing and challenging. If you are on this journey right now, therapy can be incredibly useful not only for support and education, but to feel confident in supporting your child on their own path.

As part of this work, you can learn to set aside past beliefs or rigid misconceptions and embrace new perspectives that celebrate who your kid is.

Therapy for parenting can help you:

  • Increase empathy and connection with your child

  • Develop new ways to communicate with your child

  • Accept your child for who they are

  • Process experiences from your own childhood and their impacts on your parenting

  • Learn how to separate your own feelings or experiences from your child’s

My Approach to Therapy for Parenting

Often, we parent our children in the way we were parented. Without even knowing it, you may be repeating unhelpful, unhealthy, or even dysfunctional patterns from your own childhood. In therapy with me, we’ll work on identifying these and establish new patterns that set you and your children, up for success.

Frequently asked questions about therapy for parenting

FAQs

  • I know parenting can throw some curveballs into your schedule, which can make it difficult to find time for sessions. If your child is under 5, it may be necessary at times that they be present for online sessions, but please know you may not get as much out of our time together. If your child is older than 5, working together becomes family therapy, which is a different focus and dynamic.

  • This is part of what we’ll work on in therapy, whether I work with just you, or both you and your partner. We’ll explore feelings and perspectives that each of you have and find ways to come together as a team.

Your kid doesn’t need you to be perfect. They just need you to be there.

Let’s work together to help you do that in a deeper, more connected way.
